Well, well ... I actually managed to crawl out of bed before 11 AM on this nice, mild Irish Saturday morning. The reason for my incredulity is that I crawled into bed last night around 3:30 AM. My insomnia was in no small way caused by the two large mugs of coffee I downed late that evening; I had just arrived back from Dublin and had trekked to Heuston Station through torrential rain, and was soggy and grumpy. Two and a half hours soaking wet on an overcrowded train usually ends with me throwing caution to the wind when I get home.
The coffee made me feel much improved -- for several hours.
To pass the time I watched six episodes of Heroes back-to-back. Heroes is one of the few TV shows I currently watch, that and Battlestar Galactica. Well written, well acted, and a story-line that any self-respecting comic-book enthusiast would go nuts over -- in a good way -- it is one of the better things on TV these days. And Stan Lee, the veteran Marvel comic book writer and inventor of at least half of the superheroes in movies these days, showed up for a few seconds in one of the episodes. I like little touches like that.
Heroes is also unique in that they have created a series of short graphic novels to go with the show, freely available to download. They fill in much of the back-story and, once you get past possibly the worst case of product placement I have seen in both the show and novels, it makes for a far richer universe in which to get lost for a while.
And if flashy, action-packed superhero comics are not your thing, then you can always check out the beautiful surrealism of Moomin.
